The Reproductive Health and HIV Research Unit (RHRU) is one of the foremost South African research institutions primarily engaged in research and training in the field of sexual and reproductive health and HIV which is internationally recognised. The RHRU is a World Health Organisation Collaborating Centre. The RHRU is a young and dynamic research centre within the University of the Witwatersrand . The Wits Health Consortium (Pty) Ltd ( WHC ), a wholly owned subsidiary company of the University of the Witwatersrand , employs RHRU staff. PROJECT LEADER -TB/HIV: Inner City Programme

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

The Doctor Project Leader: TB/HIV will lead the integration of TB in to all aspects of work within the HIV management cluster, with the strong focus on the innercity of Johannesburg. The project leader will provide a co-ordination interface between all the management cluster programmes, including service delivery, training and research. In addition, she/he will link and co-ordinate functions with the Mobile Clinical Support Team leader, to maximize synergies. She/he provides technical support to the team of clinicians, including responsibility for in service training initiatives in the TB/HIV arena, and day to day and strategic oversight of doctors in the facilities. In addition, the project leader will work alongside their team members in the DoH ARV roll out sites within Johannesburg, assessing clinical needs, and providing support, and technical advice to ARV, TB HIV/AIDS supportive clinical services including training, mentoring, operationalisation, referral, data management and the development distribution of appropriate materials. The leader will also be responsible for leading doctor input into training and the development of training manuals and materials. They will also participate in and develop research projects in consultation with the Clinical Director.

EXAMPLES OF KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

"  Review/develop TB/HIV training packages and update of training materials.

"  Assist in the co-ordination and implementation of capacity building activities, including the setting of training agendas and team skill levels in the areas of TB/HIV

"  Liaise with the Clinical Director on clinical/technical issues, and assist wherever possible in areas of specific expertise.

"  Provide and contribute to planning and implementation of quality improvement initiatives in the area of TB/HIV.

"  Participate in assessments and evaluations of clinical skills and needs at selected DoH sites.

"  Assessment and treatment of TB and HIV patients, including ARV’s, according to DoH Guidelines.

"  Identification of TB and ARV failures with appropriate changing of regimens and review of difficult cases with DoH staff.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS & EXPERIENCE

Medical degree with relevant postgraduate qualifications or equivalent; More than 4 years public sector experience of treating TB/HIV infected patients, demonstrated skill in giving and formulating clinical training and above average computer skills, and a valid drivers license.

OPERATIONS & DEVELOPMENT MANAGER: STI / HIV RESEARCH

OVERVIEW OF THE POSITION

The RHRU STI/HIV Research Cluster is in receipt of a number of large grants from international donors, including the UK Department for International Development, the EU and the US National Institutes for Health. The work of the cluster is focused on developing clinical and non-clinical interventions for the prevention and treatment of STIs and HIV.

RHRU is looking for an experienced and highly qualified individual to fill this position. The position is responsible for providing support to the cluster Operations & Development Director and other staff in the operational management activities and outputs of STI/HIV research & related clinical trials. Specifically, the position would be responsible for ensuring day to day operational effectiveness of finance and HR services to the projects and for being the key point of contact for relevant Wits Health Consortium (WHC) and Central Support Services (CSS) functions.

EXAMPLES OF KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

"  To gain and maintain understanding and knowledge of the Cluster and wider RHRU’s projects, goals, regulatory environment, sponsors, networks etc, necessary to effectively support the high quality delivery of projects and outputs across all Cluster research sites

"  To maintain effective working relationships with key Wits Health Consortium (WHC) finance, contracts, payroll, HR departments and with the RHRU Central Support Services (CSS) to facilitate effective service provision to the Cluster

"  To proactively trouble shoot the operational delivery of the CSS and WHC finance, contracts, payroll, HR with regard to agreed processes, actions or issues required to support the Cluster project delivery throughout the project life cycle

"  To proactively support the project Study Coordinators/Line Managers in the performance management of staff, work planning and monitoring, reporting, information management

"  To provide administrative and coordination support to the Operations and Development Director in the preparation and submission of funding proposals or grant applications, including co-ordination of information required

"  To establish a financial cash flow and general ledger reporting schedule for all the Cluster projects and to conduct initial quality control (QC) checks and to co-ordinate the timely submission of these reports to the Operations & Development Director

"  To assist with preparation, and actively contribute to, regular internal review processes such as project and Cluster meetings and quarterly strategic reviews

"  To contribute, through the identification and reporting of trends, in the development of a long term training schedule for existing and new staff to address induction, in service and development training needs

"  Support the development and implementation of systems to improve project management, including frameworks, mechanisms and tools for planning, monitoring and evaluation throughout the project lifecycle

"  Management of direct staff reports.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS & EXPERIENCE

Business Studies degree (or other suitably relevant subject such as accountancy or HR Management); 5 years progressively responsible post-graduate experience in project management in a medium to large sized organisation, (preferably an HIV, SRH or public health research environment or NGO); demonstrated experience and responsibilities for HR and financial management, staff development and training, operational planning, business process development and implementation; understanding of public health, reproductive health and HIV, ability to work with staff at all levels; experience of working with international donor agencies and US federal funding an advantage; success in writing grant applications/funding proposals an advantage. Driver’s licence, own vehicle, ability to travel essential.
