Senior Data Manager
Main purpose of the job
The purpose of this position is to ensure that processes for research data management are developed, implemented and monitored to ensure the effective collection, entry, analysis, archiving and storage of research and programmatic data to the highest standards, including managing teams of data staff for various projects and ensuring that standard operating procedures are followed and turn around times are met.

Key performance areas
• Explore data sets to identify data quality issues including missing data, accuracy cleaning and analysis for publication of completed projects
• Manipulate data sets to prepare them for analysis
• Identify and evaluate new processes and systems for the management of clinical and process data
• Evaluate and recommend computer applications and database systems to support data collection, quality assurance, cleaning and management of research participant or patient data;
• Ensure that data management systems comply with good clinical practice and any other regulatory requirements, and work with the regulatory compliance officers to ensure achievement of clinical quality management plan targets
• Provide guidance and/or support in the design of data collection instruments;
• Provide support and approve the design of databases to ensure that they meet requirements for entry and reporting of research and process/programmatic data;
• Produce or support the production summaries and listings of safety, performance and outcome data;
• Manage data staff to:
o Develop and implement appropriate systems to ensure good clinical data management (includes standard operating procedures, etc.)
o Review and maintain systems for the flow and organization of data (CRF flow from clinic through to data centre and archives)
o Monitor progress of data collection and management at selected study sites and feed this back to sites
o Oversee the closeout processes for study databases
o Establish and maintain codebooks for studies
o Manage and carry out cleaning of closed study databases
o Train staff to improve the quality of the data being collected;

• Develop and implement data management work plans
• Develop, implement and maintain all data related SOPs
• Quality assures all data in accordance with ethical and GCP requirements and SOPs
• Monitor and evaluate progress of data management for respective projects
• Compile monthly/quarterly/annual progress reports as required
• Oversee the maintenance of participant files and archiving
• Participate in and represent data management team at meetings as required
• Delegate the data capturing to Data Capturers
• Raise and resolve data queries with Data Capturers and/or clinic
• Provide support to relevant project staff and support them in the use of statistical software
• Import and export data between data management software programmes
• Process and produce accurate data reports within required timeframes
Required minimum education and training
• Postgraduate degree in Information Technology, Statistics or equivalent
• MS Office proficiency
Required minimum work experience
• Minimum 5-7 years experience in data management, analysis and reporting
• Experience in clinical research or a public health environment
• Experience in data analysis programmes such as STATA, SAS, SQL and Access
Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities
• Exceptional organizational and administrative skills
• Ability to maintain confidentiality, tact and professionalism
• Certification in good clinical practice
• Masters in Information systems and/or medical background will be an advantage
• Knowledge of STATA essential
• Ability to work under pressure
• Attention to detail
• Valid South African driver’s license
