Researcher: Well-Being of Adolescents in Vunerable Environments (WAVE)
Main purpose of the position
The Wave is an exciting new study aimed at understanding the factors that facilitate and hinder disadvantaged adolescents from obtaining health information and services they need to improve their health and well-being.
Location
Hillbrow, Johannesburg
Key performance areas
• Develop research protocols
• Obtain approval from relevant ethics and other regulatory bodies
• Develop research tools
• Write, review and/or approve SOPs
• Train the project team and other relevant staff
• Supervise fieldwork (data collection, interviews etc)
• Ensure quality data management
• Monitor progress of research projects
• Write ongoing progress reports as per project reporting requirements
• Conduct data analysis according to agreed data analysis plan
• Write up results report
• Write or contribute to peer reviewed publications (2 per year)
• Stay abreast with relevant research findings
• Collaborate with other investigators on related studies
• Write or contribute to conference presentations
• Disseminate research findings internally including presentations at research days
Required minimum education and training
• MSc or MPH or post-graduate qualification in a medical or social science field
• Demonstrated previous research experience
• Proficiency in MS office
Required minimum work experience
• Minimum of 3-5 years relevant working experience
Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities
• Interest and demonstrated experience in working with adolescents in vulnerable settings
• Experience with reaching hard-to-reach populations using RDS (Respondent Driven Sampling)
• Experience or knowledge of applications of mobile phone technology and their application to health
• Experience with data analysis in STATA and interested in working on writing of reports and manuscripts
• Candidates interested in pursuing a PhD are welcome to apply
• Prior publications are desirable but not essential
• Ability to speak more than one South African language is desirable
